Legal loophole temporarily legalises drugs

Some drugs have been made temporarily legal in Ireland, because of a loophole in the system.

Ireland has made MDMA, ketamine, crystal meth and other drugs temporarily legal.

As part of an unfortunate legal oversight, a number of drugs that are banned under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 had their illegal status reversed, following the Court of Appeal’s ruling that the act was void.

Consequently, drugs like MDMA and ketamine have been made technically legal until emergency legislation is passed and the loophole is closed, which is expected to happen later this week.

The controversy has been triggered by the Irish Court of Appeal finding that a number of additions to the original Misuse of Drugs Act were unconstitutional, as they were made without the agreement of parliament.
