Mary J. Blige: I wanted to be hairdresser

Mary J. Blige says she would have become a hairdresser had she not found fame as a singer.

Mary J. Blige would have been a hairdresser if she wasn’t famous.

The 42-year-old singer admits she would have pursued a career in a hair salon if she hadn’t become successful within the music field because she was good at styling hair when she was a youngster.

She said: ”If this hadn’t happened to me, I liked doing hair a lot when I was young. I was the hairstylist for my friends and my neighbors and I was good at it.”

The ‘No More Drama’ hitmaker is adamant money wasn’t her motivation for fame, but she admits a steady flow of cash is vital while living in society today.

She explained to The Times newspaper: ”Money important while we’re here on Earth, but really my motivation is the fans. When they come up and say, ‘You helped me get out of a bad relationship’, or, ‘You saved my life’ – those are the reasons I keep going.”

Despite her star status, however, Mary insists she doesn’t want her fans to see her as an A-list star.

She said: ”I don’t want people to look up to me. I want people to relate to me.”
