Tika Sumpter joins James Brown biopic

Tika Sumpter has joined James Brown biopic ‘Get On Up’, playing Yvonne Fair, who recorded ‘I Found You’ which later became Brown’s hit song ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’.

Tika Sumpter has joined James Brown biopic ‘Get On Up’.

The 33-year-old actress will play Yvonne Fair, one of Brown’s back-up singers who recorded a song written by the legendary singer called ‘I Found You’, which was later turned into his best-selling single ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’.

Deadline reports that Sumpter will join a cast including Chadwick Boseman – who will play the Godfather of Soul – Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, and Viola Davis.

The actress is best known for her role in TV show ‘The Haves and Have-Nots’, which airs on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN channel in the US.

Sir Mick Jagger is producing the Brown biopic along with Brian Grazer.

The film’s script was written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and Steven Baigelman.

Tate Taylor – who previously directed ‘The Help’, which featured both Spencer and Davis – is at the helm of the movie.

James Brown is credited with bringing funk music to the forefront of American culture during his six-decade career, with hit songs including ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ and ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag’.

The music star – who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and ranked seventh in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time – died from congestive heart failure and pneumonia in 2006.
