Britain’s Queen Elizabeth sent a congratulatory message to Andy Murray following his Wimbledon win yesterday (07.07.13).

The 87-year-old monarch praised the 26-year-old star after he romped to a straight sets victory against Novak Djokovic to become the first British tennis player to win the men’s singles title at the tennis tournament for 77 years.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: ”I can confirm that the queen has sent a private message to Andy Murray following his Wimbledon victory.”

Prime Minister David Cameron – who watched on from the Royal Box as Murray cruised to victory in the final – also praised the Scot for his superb performance.

He told BBC News: ”It was fantastic, it was an absolutely brilliant performance, an amazing day for Andy Murray but also an incredible day for British tennis and for Britain. He’s an amazing player but what he showed today is not only how brilliant he is technically but also he’s got this incredible courage.

”You are playing against Djokovic, who’s the great artist of comebacks and never gives up and Murray just kept going. He was magnificent.”

Several stars paid tribute to Murray’s huge performance including Victoria Beckham, who was also at Centre Court to witness the thrilling display.

She tweeted: ”Congratulations to @andy_murray and his family. Wonderful day at #wimbledon!! So proud to be British! X (sic)”

US actor Ben Stiller wrote: ”Congrats to @andy_murray…really exciting to watch. (sic)”

Movie stars Bradley Cooper and Gerard Butler sat next to each other as they watched the action unfold live, and the pair were spotted talking pictures of themselves at one point.
