‘The Wolverine’ "stands alone" from ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

The new ‘X-Men’ spin-off won’t be directly linked with next year’s big superhero blockbuster, despite actor Hugh Jackman playing his famed claw-wielding character in both movies.

‘The Wolverine’ director James Mangold reveals he has had talks with ‘X-Men’ director Bryan Singer about his new film – which will unite the casts of the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy and 2011 prequel ‘X-Men: First Class’ – but the films won’t necessarily be connected.

He explained to SFX magazine: "Bryan and I have talked and he’s seen what we’ve done. Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together.

"But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone. The journey we take Logan on here, we bring to a close."

‘The Wolverine’ depicts the character’s personal struggle with his immortality following the events of 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, which saw many of his fellow crime-fighters perish in a mutant war.

Meanwhile, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ centres on a time-travelling plot featuring older and younger incarnations of popular characters such as Magneto, who will be played by both Michael Fassbender and Sir Ian McKellen.
