Helena Bonham Carter hurt by style critics

Helena Bonham Carter feels upset when she reads negative comments about her personal style because she loves dressing-up so much.

Helena Bonham Carter gets upset when people mock the way she dresses.

The British actress regularly pulls off the most eccentric of red carpet looks with an air of confidence, but admits she takes it personally when she reads hurtful comments about her gothic-inspired style.

She confessed to the new issue of British Vogue magazine: "I’m not indelibly confident. I love clothes and I love dressing-up, and I love the way that it makes me feel.

"So I’m always disillusioned when I see a photo of myself – which I try not to – because I think, ‘No! That’s not what I meant at all!’

"Any insult is hurtful, though, because you always think you look OK. Otherwise you wouldn’t leave the house looking like you do, would you?"

The 47-year-old screen star usually plays it safe in her favourite designer Vivienne Westwood, so was outraged when she dabbled with the idea of wearing a different label to the Oscars in February – only to be told another actress had already bought the rights.

Helena scoffed: "Have you heard of anything so ridiculous? Ultimately, I don’t give a f**k. Because I’m still going to get another job, aren’t I?"

The anti-conformist star especially disliked being bossed around by a stylist because she felt like she received bad reviews anyway.

She laughed: "That didn’t really work out. I don’t like being told what do to and I particularly don’t like being told what to wear.

"I really resented paying someone to have an opinion and still getting bad reviews."
