One Direction: our next album will be ‘rockier’

One Direction have confirmed they will release a new album later this year and have revealed the sound of the record will be "rockier" than their previous material.

One Direction’s next album will be "rockier".

The ‘Little Things’ hitmakers have confirmed they are to release a new album later this year and the quintet – formed of Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik – have ventured into a new genre for it, different from their usual pop sound.

When asked at London’s Wembley Stadium today (16.05.13) – where they announced the details of their 2014 worldwide stadium tour ‘Where We Are’ – whether they had a new record in the pipeline, and if it would be going in a new direction, Louis replied: "Yeah I suppose it is slightly different this album. The answer is yes, there will be a new album. And I think it’s taken a slightly rockier territory."

His bandmate Liam continued to reveal how he and the boys took the time to write many of the songs for the record, and although they want their music to be more "edgy", he insists they haven’t changed their sound too drastically.

He added: "We’ve written a lot of the songs this time, which is nice. But we just made it a bit more edgy, but not too different, just changes here and there.

"[The sound] kind of grows as we grow."

The group are overwhelmed by the opportunity to perform at dozens of huge venues over the globe during their tour next year – which kicks in Latin America in April – and they hope they can keep their success going for years to come.

Liam added: "We want to do this as long as we can. We can’t believe this is happening all at once, but we’re just going to go with it."
