Simon Fuller’s lawsuit against ‘The X Factor’ has been resolved.
The ‘American Idol’ creator sued Fox Broadcasting over Simon Cowell’s flagship singing contest in 2011, claiming he should be listed as executive producer and receive financial compensation because the format of the rival show was almost identical to his own.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the parties have now reached an undisclosed agreement and the case was dismissed at Los Angeles Superior Court.
Fuller originally filed a complaint the very same day ‘The X Factor’ USA first aired on September 21, 2011, claiming Fox had ignored a 2005 deal allowing him a producer credit and fee for the US version of the show.
Fox allegedly originally helped broker a settlement with Fuller which kept Cowell on ‘American Idol’ for five seasons in exchange for keeping ‘X Factor’ out of the US until 2011, while original show ‘Pop Idol’ had been taken off the air in the UK.
The music mogul was in the process of suing ‘X Factor’ creator Cowell for copyright infringement at the time he launched his second lawsuit. He first complained when the UK version of ‘The X Factor’ launched in 2004 over it’s similarity to the ‘Idol’ franchise.
