Emma Stone and Naomi Watts join Birdman

Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Keaton have joined Fox Searchlight’s ‘Birdman’, a dark comedy about a fallen movie star who creates a stage play.

Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Keaton will star in ‘Birdman’.

The actors have signed on for the lead roles in Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu’s dark comedy about a faded movie star – who once played an iconic superhero – trying to recapture his former glory by creating a stage play, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Michael, who played caped crusader Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film and its 1992 sequel, will take the lead role as the fallen screen star turned theatre producer, while ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ actress Emma will play his daughter, who is fresh out of rehab and trying to get her life together by taking a job as her father’s personal assistant.

On the heels of her Oscar nomination for ‘The Impossible’, Australian actress Naomi Watts will star as the play’s leading lady and Zach will play the production’s slimy producer.

The film has yet to cast the pivotal role of the play’s leading man whose egotistical nature threatens to derail the production, as well as the role of Michael’s ex-wife.

Alejandro co-wrote the film’s script with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo.

The film will be made by Fox Searchlight and New Regency, with Alejandro directing and producing.

Filming is due to begin in April.
