Britain’s Duchess of Cornwall has claimed ”you never know” if she will become queen.
The duchess – who was known as Camilla Parker Bowles prior to her marriage to Prince Charles – is officially to be titled Princess Consort should Charles ascend to the throne, but her remark during a visit to St. Mary’s primary school in south west London yesterday (23.01.13) has fuelled speculation about her future title.
Quizzed by a six-year-old student at the school on whether she would become queen, Camilla – who was on official duties as the new patron for children’s literacy charity, Beanstalk – laughingly replied: ”You never know.”
The 65-year-old royal was met with mixed public reception when she married the Prince of Wales in 2005, largely due to speculation over her part in the end of Charles and the late Princess Diana’s marriage. In order to fend off potential public outcry regarding her becoming queen, the then New Labour government stated she would be given the title of Princess Consort if and when the prince took the throne from his mother, Queen Elizabeth.
Her latest remark follows her 2010 comment to NBC about becoming queen, when she said: ”That’s, well, we’ll see won’t we? That could be.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron has admitted to being a ”big Camilla fan” and said the idea would be ”discussed and debated”.
