The Washington Capitals aren’t the first team when it comes to the financial side of field hockey.
The Arizona Coyotes and Carolina Hurricanes have been in the news enough with their mismanagement and questionable decisions in recent years.
However, according to the Washington Post, the Capitals may be leaving Washington (D.C.) and moving to Virginia.
In recent months, executives with Monumental Sports have reportedly explored relocating the Capitals and Wizards from downtown D.C. to Northern Virginia.

Now, before you make the leap, it’s important to understand that the Caps already practice in Northern Virginia, which is located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., if you will. Interestingly, the rink is located on the top floor of a shopping mall.
The difference is that now, the team could move all its activities to Arlington.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Capitals and Wizards, will meet with members of the Arlington city government to evaluate the possibility of moving to Crystal City, a neighborhood very close to Washington, accessible by metro.
In 2017, the city of Washington invested $50 million in Capital One Arena, the Caps’ current arena. Safety is currently an issue, however. The amphitheater is located in the middle of Chinatown, which has seen its crime rate rise in recent years.
For the time being, the City of Washington wants to address this issue, and a representative of Monumental Sports & Entertainment agrees, not denying the information provided by the Washington Post.
What we do know is that discussions are preliminary and that the Crystal City area is attractive because of the arrival of Amazon, which has set up its second headquarters there.
What will become interesting is whether the team will change its name or logo. Given that the new amphitheatre would be very close to Washington, would the Capitals still be called that?
Doesn’t the Arlington Capitals sound strange?
