This morning, just before the press conference with Brad Treliving, the Leafs’ new GM, the Penguins hired Kyle Dubas.
The former Toronto boss got the job of President of Hockey Operations.

Who will be the next GM in Pittsburgh, then? Will Dubas bring his guy? If so, will Mathieu Darche be considered? After all, the Quebecer was obviously in the hiring process, but in the end, he wasn’t hired. At least for the time being.
This morning, Penguins owners announced to Mathieu Darche that he would not have the role that Kyle Dubas inherited. Fenway Sports Group did not mention the GM position, however… as reported by Pierre LeBrun.
Hearing Lightning AGM Mathieu Darche went deep into the Penguins search process, informed this morning by Fenway Sports Group he was out for the job Kyle Dubas got.

So he’s been in the race right to the end. For some time now, Darche has often come second. One day he’ll get his chance, though, I’m convinced.
According to reports, it’s not impossible that he could become Pittsburgh’s general manager. Unlike Steve Greeley, for example, Fenway Sports Group wouldn’t talk to him about the GM position per se, but rather “the position Kyle Dubas had”.
Hearing that Steve Greeley, Director of Hockey Strategy, Scouting and Development for the Dallas Stars, was informed this morning by Fenway Group he was out of running for Penguins GM job.
I would assume that means Kyle Dubas has people in mind for that job– Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) June 1, 2023
Sure, the job is a lot more appealing than his current role in Tampa Bay, but how much more responsibility would he have? After all, Julien BriseBois loves his assistant and delegates a lot of tasks to him. I may be speaking through my hat right now, but I have a feeling that Darche is the busiest assistant GM in the NHL.
Perhaps that’s part of the reason why he seems to be attracting interest from all corners of the NHL.
After Montreal, Chicago and Vancouver, the Quebecker is still in second place for one of Pittsburgh’s major positions. At the moment, only the Penguins are without a GM. Darche will probably have to wait a little longer before another door opens, unless he’s Dubas’ man.
