Suede are trying not to "over think" their new album.
The ‘Beautiful Ones’ band are in the studio working on their first new record in ten years, but after trying new musical directions on 1999’s ‘Head Music’ and 2002’s ‘A New Morning’ to mixed success, they are taking a more simple approach this time around.
Singer Brett Anderson said: "I think on the last two records we were trying to reinvent ourselves and it didn’t work. With this one, we’ve been a bit more instinctive about it, just written some songs and played them and gone with it a bit more. It’s not so much a back-to-basics approach, as trying not to over think it."
Bass player Mat Osman added the band are more "clued up" than when they wrote some of their less successful material.
He said: "This isn’t an attempt to re-write the first three albums. But we’re thinking: If we’d been more clued up and less flaky, if we hadn’t f***ed it up, where would we have gone?"
Brett also thinks the new material is worthy of comparison with what has come before it.
He said: "The back catalogue casts a very big shadow. That’s why lots of bands don’t come back and make records. It’s been hard, there’s been lots of soul searching, but I genuinely feel confident that this album can be appraised for its merits."
