Tom Ford won’t work for anyone else

Tom Ford wouldn’t work for another fashion house.

The 51-year-old designer thinks he would be taking a "step backwards" in his career if he were to lend his name to another brand when he has worked so hard on his eponymous label.

He told Mode magazine: "Been there, done that. I learned a tremendous amount from my time at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, but I was always designing within an existing framework. In launching my own line, I am allowed to only create products that I believe in.

"Everything at Tom Ford is steeped in my DNA – it would be a step backwards for me now to go and design for another fashion house."

The Tom Ford label recently branched out into womenswear and the designer says it is a "frivolous endeavor" for him as he can play more with fabric and colour, whereas his menswear ranges are "personal" because he creates things he wants to wear himself.

He explained: "Of course, as a man, designing menswear is more personal to me – I design what I would like to wear. Designing womenswear is a more frivolous endeavor for me as I am able to evoke more fantasy with the fabrics and colors. I love designing both ranges and I wouldn’t feel fulfilled without either of these outlets."

And Tom feels grateful that his is the label of choice for many of the actors he admires.

He said: "I am fortunate that every leading man I would love to dress wears – and buys – Tom Ford.

"Brad Pitt has been an extremely loyal customer since the onset of the brand, and I am happy to dress Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling and Will Smith, among many many others."
