French food festivals compete for attention in Brooklyn

(Relaxnews) – Dueling French food events in Brooklyn will be vying for the attention — and attendance — of New Yorkers this week as organizers of Le Fooding and Omnivore host festivals simultaneously in one of the trendiest culinary capitals in the US right now.

In the coming days, two of the hippest French food festival exports will hit the borough of Brooklyn, competing for attendees as the events overlap.

It’a ‘ballsy’ move, notes popular food blog Grub Street New York, and one that begs for comparison.

Both attract the “foodster cool kids” and pitch themselves as irreverent festivals that frown upon starched convention and elite food rankings, shining the spotlight instead on a young, dynamic, irreverent league of chefs with a disdain for rules.

Grub Street gives a slight leading edge – in the form of half a cornichon – to Omnivore for its Brooklyn factor.

Here’s a breakdown on the two festivals which take place simultaneously in Brooklyn over the next few days.

Le Fooding Brooklyn Fling
September 19-23
Participating chefs are described as a family of members who are “better read but less well shaven, some with tattoos, all young, and totally radical.” The US edition of Le Fooding, meanwhile, focuses on the fringe, new generation of chefs emerging from the outskirts of worldwide cities, like the l’Est parisien, East London, and Brooklyn.

For five days, chefs like Iñaki Aizpitarte of Le Chateaubriand in Paris, the Young Turks of London and Magnus Nilsson of Fäviken Magasinet in Sweden will be paired with local chefs and artists to show off their chops to a crowd of foodie hipsters in sites like the Williamsburg Flea Market and the Nitehawk Cinema.

Omnivore Food Tour: New York
September 21-23
New York is just one of a several stops on Omnivore’s world tour, which included Montreal, Shanghai, Moscow, Paris and Geneva. Like Le Fooding, “a new generation of European chefs” will be paired up with their local counterpart to host F***ing Dinners, an experience as irreverent as its name implies.

Other events include Masterclasses hosted by Omnivore’s pick of creative, inventive newcomers who share their culinary vision with industry professionals.

Names include Alexandre Couillon of La Marine in Noirmoutier, France, Ivan Shishkin of Delicatessen in Moscow, and Danny Bowien of Chinese Mission Food in San Francisco and New York.
