Nicole Richie’s scent inspired by youth

Nicole Richie’s first self-titled fragrance was inspired by the "different oils and lotions" her mother mixed together when she was a child.

Nicole Richie’s debut fragrance was inspired by her childhood.

The designer – who was brought up by disco legend Lionel Richie and his wife Brenda Harvey – has revealed her self-titled scent smells like the "different oils and lotions" her mother used when she was younger.

She said: "I was inspired by the scents of my childhood. I knew exactly what I wanted to do because my mother would combine different oils and lotions and the blend of scents became very special to me."

Among the notes used in the perfume are blackberry, cashmere, sandalwood and golden amber.

However, Nicole – who is married to rocker Joel Madden – was not only concerned with the smell but also how it looked, and took ideas from the art nouveau movement.

She said in a statement: "It’s very much a reflection of my individual style – a spiritual balance of femininity and bohemian. It’s the notion that fashion can be easy, comfortable and offer juxtaposition between casual and luxury."
