I don’t think I’ll get any tomatoes thrown at me if I say that Lane Hutson is one of the most exciting prospects in field hockey right now.
It’s rare to see a defenseman of his age enjoy so much success in the NCAA, which is seen as a great stage in a player’s development.
That said, it seems Lane is simply skipping some of those stages. He quickly became Boston University’s number one option on the blue line, and we all know what a great first season he had at university level.
Lane Hutson is so impressive that he’s already being talked about as a steal for the 2022 draft. Eric Engels took it a step further, talking about the young man duringan appearance on Tony Marinaro’s podcast:
I think the best player in the 2022 draft was selected 62nd overall. – Eric Engels
Ouch!

It’s amazing how much praise Lane Hutson has garnered over the past 18 months.
He’s always, always in the news for the right reasons… And that’s got Montreal Canadiens fans excited.
Because yes, fans have every right to salivate at the idea of seeing him become an excellent NHL defenseman.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, either. Lane hasn’t proven anything yet at the professional level, and we agree that there are other, very good players coming out of the 2022 draft.
Logan Cooley, Simon Nemec, Juraj Slafkovsky, David Jiricek, Shane Wright, Cutter Gauthier, Conor Geekie, Pavel Mintyukov… And we could name many more.
Where it gets intriguing is when we talk about Lane Hutson’s size. If he were just a little bit taller before the 2022 draft began, he would never have slipped to No. 62.
We knew he’d get bigger, and right now, Lane doesn’t look like a dwarf on the ice. We don’t know his exact height, but he seems to have put on an inch or two if you figure he’s almost as tall as six-foot Macklin Celebrini:
Outside of the beautiful shot, it seems like Lane is a solid 5’10 at least now
In the picture, he’s beside Wilmer (5’8) and Celebrini (6’0) and is closer in height to Celebrini. At the very worst based on angles, he’s the same difference from both
We can do 5’10 🔥👀#GoHabsGo pic.twitter.com/9iJ3qs6Unb

That should help him when he’s ready to make the jump to the pros.
He’ll still have some work to do to add a bit of frame, but putting on weight is something you have to work at, unlike size.
