AnnaSophia Robb will play Carrie Bradshaw in a ‘Sex and the City’ prequel.

The 18-year-old actress – who is best known for her role as Violet in Tim Burton’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ – will take on the role made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in a new series about Carrie’s high school life.

Based on the novel by Candace Bushnell, ‘The Carrie Diaries’ will revolve around the character’s coming of age at high school in Manhattan in the 80s as she gets to grips with romance and life in the big city.

Network CW’s development head Thom Sherman told Entertainment Weekly: "The focus is so much on the Carrie Bradshaw character and who she was at 16, 17-years-old.

"We weirdly compare it to ‘Smallville’ because it’s an origin story – how she started writing, how she came to love Manhattan. Basically how we frame the show is: ‘Carrie at 16 found her first love and it’s not a boy – it’s Man-hattan’. "The other unique aspect is obviously the time period."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, former ‘Sex and the City’ writer/co-producer Amy B. Harris will adapt the book while Miguel Arteta will direct.

‘Running Wilde’ star Stefania Owen has been cast as Carrie’s 14-year-old sister.
