Takeout food linked to diabetes

Getting food ‘to go’ more than twice a week harmful to health.

It only takes two trips a week for takeout to increase your chances of getting type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Researchers tracked 1,896 people between the ages of 26 and 36, and found that almost 40 percent of men and 20 percent of women get takeout twice a week.

After medical checkups, they found women more vulnerable to health problems from poor eating than men, as they showed higher levels of glucose and insulin that lead to type 2 diabetes.

Ninety percent of diabetes cases are related to poor diet and poor lifestyle. Too busy to cook for themselves, young adults and professionals are more likely to develop health problems like diabetes and heart disease.

Researchers said it was hard to tell if it was fast food or excess weight that caused the problems.

“It is unclear whether the differences [between one takeout a week and two] are clinically significant,” noted the researchers. “But they may represent an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type two diabetes.”
