Travel guide for foodies

Where to get the best food on your travels.

One of the best things about traveling is that there are so many delicious local foods just awaiting your discovery. The Lonely Planet travel guide has listed a few of its favorites.

Try a plate of the country’s staple, couscous, in Casablanca, Morocco, along with a cup of mint tea. The couscous grain is topped with a spicy stew of vegetables, or a mix of veggies and meat. Better yet, get yourself invited for a family dinner, since grandmother’s couscous is probably the best.

Yummy tapas in Barcelona include delicious snacks like patatas bravas (potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce), croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes), and chorizo (pork sausage). Other Spanish cities famous for their tapas are Logrono, San Sebastian, Seville, and Madrid, but don’t forget about paella in Valencia.

Stir-fried rice with chicken or seafood, vegetables, eggs and a sweetish soy sauce is a simple, yet popular meal known as nasi goreng in Penang, Malaysia, an increasingly popular tourist destination.

On of Brazil’s national dishes is a dark and spicy stew built on a foundation of black beans and pork, known as feijoada.

A steaming bowl of gumbo is as central to New Orleans as listening to jazz, zydeco or swamp blues. From classic Creole to pungent Cajun, this Louisiana favorite is a hearty broth of seafood or smoked meats thickened with okra or a wheat-and-fat mixture called roux and served on a bed of rice.
