Eating fish boosts memory up to 15%

Fatty acids in fish may be the key to preventing Alzheimer’s.

Eating fatty fish like salmon or trout is known to be good for the brain. Now, a new study says omega-3 content in fish oil can boost memory function by as much as 15 percent, reports the Daily Mail.

For six months, 176 people received supplements of DHA – an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout and shrimp.

The participants’ memory and cognitive abilities were evaluated, and after six months, men demonstrated 15 per cent faster working memory, while women had a seven per cent improvement in the speed of episodic memory.

Scientists believe that DHA is the key to preventing degenerative brain diseases, like Alzheimer’s, which is the most common form of dementia.

DHA is one of the most highly-concentrated fats in the brain, and is essential to its structure and operation.

These new results demonstrate that a diet rich in fish helps preserve brain health and prevent dementia.
