John Mayer loses his voice

Singer on total vocal rest following throat surgery.

Pop singer John Mayer noted in a September 16th blog posting that his fifth studio album, Born and Raised, was being delayed due to granulomas discovered in his throat, reports NY Daily News.

The small nodule was found next to the vocal cords and was treatable. Mayer described this as a "temporary setback" and that recording and mixing of Born and Raised was entirely finished except for a few remaining vocal tracks. He expects the album to be out in early 2012.

Last Friday (October 20), Mayer updated his fans about his treatment, announcing that he “had surgery this afternoon to remove it and am now on complete vocal rest for a month or more", during which he plans to "travel the country, look and listen."

"It’s been a very long process in waiting to see if time was an alternative to surgery, but even given two weeks’ voice rest (along with many other approaches), there was no change for the better," he wrote.

Mayer said he plans to focus on his music.

"I never thought I’d be wishing I could do what I love again," he added in his post. "I stay in at night, picking guitar parts off of records and dreaming of playing on the big stage. The only difference between now and when I was 18 is that now I have this beautiful, meaningful record waiting for me when I can sing it."
