When the Canadiens decided to ignore Russian forward Matvei Michkov in the 2023 Entry Draft, many fans were frustrated that their favorite team had declined to select an offensive prodigy. For others, it was a relief because, according to several sources, Michkov was described as a bundle of trouble.
Yes, the situation with Russia was the most worrying, but his attitude was also very disturbing. According to Russian scout Andrei Nikolishin, Mishkov had a bad attitude with his teammates, his coaches, in short, everyone around him.
This time, the story is completely different. Two of his teammates spoke to PHLY Sports journalist Alexander Appleyard about how the young player’s attitude had completely changed in just a few months.
This has been brewing for a while. My first piece for @PHLY_Sports.
I talked to two of @NHLFlyers Matvei Michkov’s team-mates with @HCSOCHI, Captain Gleb Koryagin and linemate Artur Tyanulin to find out more about the #Flyers top prospect on and off-ice.https://t.co/CpURwYibDf

HC Sochi captain Gleb Koryakin even went so far as to say that the 19-year-old striker’s attitude has now become “exemplary” in the dressing room. A far cry from the player who was disrespectful during interviews with NHL teams.

What would explain this drastic change? According to his trio-mate, Artur Tyanulin, it was the death of his father. The shock would have helped him pull himself together and become more mature.
In fact, since his father’s death, Michkov has become the man of the house, taking care of his family. This kind of challenge helps us to work on ourselves.
After a long start to the season with almost no playing time with SKA St. Petersburg, Mishkov was finally loaned out to another KHL team in September, HC Sochi, with whom he has enjoyed great success.
He had also joined them on loan last season, and had enjoyed great success. The team is giving him plenty of playing time, and it’s paying off! He already has 29 points from 32 games this season.
The Russian problem is still a stumbling block between Michkov and the NHL, but resolving his bad attitude is a step in the right direction, which must put a smile on the faces of many Flyers fans.
