American alt rock duo the Black Keys announced their seventh studio album, El Camino, will hit stores later this year on December 6, reports Spinner.
The news follows a viral marketing campaign that included a spoof newspaper ad in Ohio’s Akron Beacon Journal for a 1994 El Camino; those who called the contact number were put through to a pre-recorded message from band member Patrick Carney.
A YouTube video – starring comedian Bob Odenkirk – was then uploaded the next day (October 10), spoofing outtakes from an old car commercial… also for a 1994 El Camino. The campaign finally pulled everything together with a fake website advertising the same van and allowing fans to pre-order the album.
El Camino was produced by Danger Mouse and the Black Keys themselves, and was recorded at band member Dan Aurbach’s studio in Nashville.
"This record is more straight ahead rock and roll," Aurbach explained, comparing the album to its predecessor, the 2010 album Brothers. The singer-guitarist went on to describe the new album as "raw, driving, and back to basics."
