Melbourne Festival goes international

Artists from around the globe converge on Australia.

The Melbourne Festival – one of the largest multi-arts festivals in the world – is set to kick off this weekend, running from October 6 to 22 with plenty of fun for the whole family.

While the festival itself takes place in Australia, the subject of the festival is international in scope with visiting artists from around the world. Among the countries represented are: Russia, India, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Lithuania, Ireland, Israel, Indonesia, Japan, Syria and Ukraine.

Highlights include the theater performance of Rhinoceros in Love by the National Theatre of China; choral presentation The Manganiyar Seduction by Roystel Abel; modern dance performance, Political Mother by the Hofesh Shechter Company; and a symphony performed by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

Other events include theater, concerts, opera, visual art, educational programs and even cooking, among others. For those on a budget, the festival offers a number of free events, such as documentaries, discussion panels and access to the festival’s pop up backstage lounge.
