Quebec celebrates art and literature

Journées de la culture and the Québec en toutes lettres festival take place this month.

The province of Quebec is showing off its artistic side with the annual Journées de la culture (Culture Days), taking place throughout the province starting tomorrow, September 30, and running until Sunday, October 2.

There are almost 2,000 events taking place in communities all over the province, from playwriting workshops in Montreal to a photography contest in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.

"The Journées are carried out voluntarily by artists, workers and cultural organizations, who, during the three days of the event, offer free activities so citizens can explore the hidden side of art and culture," explains the official website.

"Our rich and welcoming demonstrations, hands-on workshops, conferences and guided tours build simple and warm relationships between artists, cultural workers and their fellow citizens."

Later in October, the Québec en toutes lettres festival celebrates the literary side of the province, featuring Quebec novelist Réjean Ducharme this year. Kicking off October 13, the festival runs until the 23rd and includes a number of workshops to help hone reading and writing skills while learning more about Quebec’s literary heritage.
