Discover source of province’s power with Doors Open Ontario

Unique tours shed light on province’s power sources, environmental practices.

Offering environmentalists, historians and the scientifically-curious an overview of Ontario’s energy-producing arsenal, the Doors Open series provides a thoughtfully-planned itinerary of outdoor exhibits and attractions throughout the province September through October, according to Canoe Travel.

The educational series kicks-off September 24 at The Erie Shores Wind Farm, located east and west of Port Burwell, along Lake Erie. The collection of 66 wind-powered turbines located here are said to produce an impressive 278,000 megawatt-hours of renewable, “clean energy” each year.

On September 17, the Doors Open tour of Kitchener’s REEP House will appeal to those interested in sustainable living. Guests will learn how non-profit REEP (Residential Energy Efficiency Project) converted an 1905 home into a structure that is “super-insulated” and “water-wise.” The enviromentally-friendly house features eco-conscious bells and whistles like a water recycling system, in-floor heating, energy-efficient windows, and rubber shingles constructed of old tires.

For a rare peek inside Ontario Power Generation’s Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, visitors are invited to explore the gargantuan facility for an insider’s look at both historic and current operations on October 1.
