You’ve probably seen it circulating on social networks, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of signing William Nylander to a long-term contract.
We’re talking about an eight-year contract at $11.5 million a year. That’s $92 million in total.
These are the figures that have been circulating in recent days for Nylander, who should also get full non-trade protection as part of his new deal.
Still not officially signed yet, but the Maple Leafs and William Nylander’s camp putting the finishing touches on his extension. As @DarrenDreger and @reporterchris mentioned earlier this morning, will be 8 x $11.5M AAV with full no-move, etc.

He won’t be able to say he’s underpaid anymore, in any case.
What this means is that the Maple Leafs have managed to keep Auston Matthews and William Nylander for the future. New GM Brad Treliving has no doubt been hard at work.
Matthews signed a four-year contract extension (2024-2028) last August. The player will earn a total of $53 million, or $13.25 million per season.
Until 2028, the two guys will be playing together.
(OBOXADSQ || []).push({“cmd”: “addBanner”});
This means that next year, the two players will go from a combined salary of $18,602,616 to $24,750,000. That’s a difference of over six million dollars, which is more than the projected increase in the cap.
It was undoubtedly the right thing to do in Toronto, but it’s still important to point out that with the contracts of John Tavares and Mitch Marner, there will be big salaries in Toronto next year.
When we look at the 15 guys who will have a cap hit of at least $10 million in 2024-2025 (16, including Nylander, who will be added to that list), we see that four Maple Leafs guys make the cut.
Matthews (1st), Tavares (8th) and Marner (10th) are currently in the top-10. Marner will slip a bit when Nylander’s contract becomes official, but that’s still a lot of cash for four guys.
We’re talking $46.653 million. Ouch.
Remember that Marner and Tavares will be free agents in a year and a half if they don’t sign contract extensions by then. Will the Maple Leafs extend Tavares’ contract?
It’s anyone’s guess.
Last year, Jack Eichel became the first player to win the Cup with a cap hit of at least $10 million. In 2021, Carey Price became the first player to reach the final with a cap hit of at least $10 million.

An interesting stat from the Habs win vs the NYR on Saturday.
