Sting writes for Broadway

Former Police singer follows in Bono’s footsteps.

British musician Sting, who turns 60 years next month, is venturing into new territory – the Broadway musical, reports Music-News.

Sting has teamed up with author Brian Yorkey, winner of a Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and lyricist for the hit Broadway musical Next To Normal. Yorkey has written a new play The Last Ship and Sting has written about24 new songs for it.

“It’s Sting’s first foray into writing for musical theatre,” Yorkey said in a New York Times interview, “so we wanted to start having him meet actors and hear them sing at the earliest possible point.”

“[Sting]’s written a couple dozen, maybe 20, 24, amazing new songs for the show,” he added. “He’s writing great theatre music. It’s very, very distinctly Sting but it also is theater music. It’s not just pop music transposed into the theater.”

Still in development, The Last Ship will conduct first readings in October.
