Family and friends react to death of Amy Winehouse

Family and celebrity friends share their reactions to the Rehab singer’s death this weekend.

As the world reacts to the tragic death of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse this past Saturday (July 23), her family admits to feeling completely caught "off guard", reports People.

The 27-year-old songstress – infamous for addictions to drugs and alcohol – was found dead at home in her London flat over the weekend. For now, the official cause is “unexplained.”

Relatives of the deceased star, including her mother Janis, father Mitch and brother Alex, made a declaration in a statement yesterday (July 24): "Our family was taken aback by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. It leaves a huge void in our lives. We come together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space during this terrible time."

Celebrities released their own reactions to the tragic news via Twitter. Her friend, Kelly Osbourne, wrote: "I can’t breathe now, I’m in tears, I just lost one of my best friends. I will always love you Amy and I will never forget the real you!"

Comedian and actor Russell Brand, who met Winehouse before either become famous, wrote a revealing post on his website entitled "For Amy.” He recalled the first time he saw Winehouse perform and called her "a genius."

Several other music stars, including Rihanna, agree that the young, soulful singer made an indelible mark and that their industry has lost an incredible talent.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.
