UK museum is last stop for Harry Potter train

Hogwarts Express to go on display in York.

With the Harry Potter finale now in theaters, all of its stars are turning their attention to their post-Potter careers – including the Olton Hall steam engine that doubled for the iconic Hogwarts Express, and is now headed to York’s National Railway Museum in the U.K., reports the Daily Mail.

The train was on display at the York museum once before, but now it looks like it will be going on permanent display, sure to draw Potter fans from around the globe.

Each year in J.K. Rowling’s famed children’s novels, the gleaming Hogwarts Express was responsible for picking up the young witches and wizards at Platform 9 3/4 at London’s King’s Cross station and transporting them to the wonders of Hogwarts School.

In the movies, the role of the Hogwarts Express went to the Olton Hall number 5972. The engine was built in the English town of Swindon in 1937. Retired from service in 1963, the classic steam engine was destined for the scrap heap until it was rescued from the junkyard in 1981. In 1997, it was painted dark red and given a makeover into the Hogwarts Express, serving faithfully in the eight Harry Potter films over the years.
