Small step for Muse, giant leap for music

English alt rockers want to perform in space.

English alt rockers Muse hope to record a song in outer-space on board the Virgin Galactic shuttle – at least if it means they can have a free ride, reports QTheMusic.com.

"We’re trying to blag a free trip on it," explained frontman Matt Bellamy. "I’m going to try to convince Richard Branson to let us make a music video or record a song up there. I think that would be cool."

When asked if he wouldn’t be intimidated taking such a giant leap for music kind, Bellamy seemed ready for the heady responsibility.

"Would I be scared?" he replied. "No, I think I’ll be all right."

Virgin Galactic expects to start operations in 2013, when it will carry its first load of paying passengers outside the earth’s atmosphere.

Once there, the travelers will be treated to about five minutes of weightlessness and silence in the vacuum of space before the ship makes its return to earth. Of course, the journey will be considerably less silent with a rock band on board.

A seat aboard the six-passenger spacecraft will cost just under $200,000, and hundreds of people have already paid the reservation deposit to hold their spot in line.
