Get a taste of Kyoto in two days

Visit main attractions in 48 hours.

If you dream of a trip to Japan, but time or money prevent you from making a long visit, it is possible to discover Kyoto in one weekend, reports Canoe Travel. Such a journey may require a bit of preparation and organization, but it will allow you to see as much as possible.

Suggested tourist attractions include Sanjusangendo, a huge wooden hall with 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Each face on the statues is said to be different.

Another essential is the Kamo River. One can admire its relaxing beauty throughout the year, with cherry blossoms and weeping willows creating a picturesque setting for summertime diners.

For something a little different, take a walk in the hanamachi, or geisha districts, where you can admire the geisha’s traditional kimono and sophisticated makeup.

Built in 1620, the Nijo Castle was home to the feudal lords who used to rule Japan. Richly-decorated rooms are joined by deliberately squeaky corridors that provided warning of any intruders.

For souvenirs, stroll down Teramachi street, which consists of several blocks of shops with antiques, old books and Japanese prints.
