Arcade Fire short film now online

Scenes from the Suburbs 30-minute film directed by Spike Jonze.

Scenes from the Suburbs – the companion short film to Arcade Fire’s award-winning album The Suburbs – is now streaming online, reports Consequence of Sound.

Directed by Spike Jonze, Scenes from the Suburbs is "like a science-fiction B-movie companion piece for the record," frontman Win Butler explained to Pitchfork.

"Basically, we played Spike some music from the album and the first images that came to his mind had the same feeling as this idea for a science fiction film I had when I was younger. My brother and I and Spike wrote it together, which was really fun – it was like total amateur hour."

The short film made its debut at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and received rave reviews after its screening at SXSW in March.

"We didn’t have the ability to do a feature-length, but since we always make feature-length things in the musical world, we wanted to try to give it the feel of a feature, but also have it be a little more disparate structurally," said Butler.

A deluxe edition of the album, due out August 2, will come with a DVD including a copy of the short and a documentary on the making of the album.
