Global Smurfs Day brings fans together

Smurfs fans will gather around the world on June 25.

In just four days, cartoon-lovers around the world will gather in major cities to celebrate Global Smurfs Day on June 25, reports Relaxnews.

Participants are also being encouraged to dress up in blue, in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs in a 24-hour period at multiple venues. To break the record, organizers are hoping more the 2,510 Smurfs will gather simultaneously around theglobe.

The event marks the birthday of the Smurfs creator Peyo, who was born June 25, 1928 – and to promote the July 29 release of The Smurfs movie.

"There are few characters as iconic as The Smurfs – for more than 50 years, they have been icons of popular culture, appealing across generations. Peyo’s creation endures, and that’s why Global Smurfs Day is a fitting way to celebrate his birthday," explained Marc Weinstock with Sony Pictures, who are co-producing the movie and hosting Global Smurfs Day.

Some of the cities taking part include Brussels, Belgium (Peyo’s home country); Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Athens, Greece; Moscow, Russia; and Warsaw, Poland. In New York City, the South Street Seaport will be renamed the Smurf Street Blueport, while London’s O2 Arena will become the O-Blue arena in honor of the big day.
