Rediscover Machu Picchu

Peru’s famous Lost City of the Incas celebrates 100th anniversary.

Machu Picchu, the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ in Peru, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with a number of celebrations and tour package deals, reports Canoe Travel.

Of course, the pre-Columbian site is a great deal older than 100 years – in fact, it’s thought to date back to circa 1400 – but it was on July 24, 1911 that American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered the famous lost city. Since then, the site has become a major tourist attraction and one of the most enduring images of the Incan empire.

A designated world heritage site, Machu Picchu sits on a mountain range above Peru’s Urubamba Valley, located about 80 km northwest of the city of Cusco.

In honor of the site’s anniversary, travel agency Intrepid Travel is offering 20 percent off certain South American tours. The company caters to small groups and has 54 different tour packages for South America, 51 of which include a trip to Machu Picchu.
