Angelina Jolie returns for Salt sequel?

The Tourist star expresses interest in coming back for more high-sodium action.

Sony Pictures is moving forward with a proposed sequel to its successful action movie Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, reports Deadline.

The studio is hoping the actress will reprise her role of Evelyn Salt. In the original movie, Jolie played a CIA agent accused of being a Russian spy. In an evolution of the male spy-action genre starring characters like James Bond and Jason Bourne, perhaps Evelyn Salt will bring a new cinematic franchise to the table.

Jolie has become something of a specialist – in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt – as a female action star who can kick butts and take names, without having to seduce every guy in town.

The mother of six has indicated she would be interested in a sequel, provided she likes the script. Kurt Wimmer, who scripted the first film, is now working on the sequel.

Directed by Phillip Noyce and released last year, Salt earned $300 million U.S. in worldwide box office.

Currently in theaters, Angelina Jolie is the voice of Tigress in Kung Fu Panda 2. She will begin filming Cleopatra in 2013. Last year, she made her screenwriting and directorial debut with the Bosnian War love story In the Land of Blood and Honey, which is due out December 23.
