Givenchy pounces on panther theme

Wild eyewear collection sports faux fur.

In September, creative director of the French design house Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci, will launch his retro-style eyewear collection in keeping with the panther theme of the fall-winter 2011-2012 collection, reports Vogue.

The new glasses were presented during the autumn-winter 2011-2012 runway show in March, which also featured models sporting felt or vinyl caps with little cat ears, and fashions silk-screened with images of a yellow-eyed black panther.

Tisci’s new eyewear collection features a panther resting on each arm of the ‘50s-inspired frames. The acetate frames are available in five colors: yellow, charcoal, plum, navy blue, black.

The designer has also utilized some unusual materials for his frames, with one design available in black velvet and another featuring faux-fur that echoes the black panther theme.

The collection will be offered as early as September in Givenchy boutiques and selected stores, priced at around $725.

The house of Givenchy was founded in 1952 by designer Hubert de Givenchy and is currently owned by luxury goods corporation LVMH, and is one of its largest apparel divisions after Dior.

Riccardo Tisci was named chief designer of womenswear in 2005. Reviews have been mixed so far, but influential fashion critics, like Cathy Horyn of the New York Times and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune, have focused on Tisci’s conceptual leanings, as well as his future potential to revitalize the Givenchy brand.
