Pirate festival makes land at Montreal

The Grand Boucan du Marché Bonsecours pirate festival kicks off next month.

Would-be pirates will converge in Montreal this June for the annual Grand Boucan du Marché Bonsecours, a pirate festival in New France, better known today as Quebec.

On June 18 and 19, landlubbers are encouraged to don a pirate costume and head to the Bonsecours Market in Old Montreal.

The allée des artisans et des marchands (artist and merchant alley) will be open both days from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., while the sinful terrasse du Cabaret du Roy (King’s Cabaret patio) opens at 11 a.m. and runs long into the night, providing daring pirates with an illegal gambling house and smoking room.

Young seafarers can test their pirate skills with the parcours des moussaillons (buccaneers path), and learn which job they’re best-suited for, be it pirate or gunner, boatswain or captain.

Three stages will host a wide variety of thematic musical performances and skill demonstrations throughout the weekend. On Saturday night, be sure to don your best rags for the Captain’s Ball at 9 p.m.
