Inaugural shows planned for Montreal planetarium

Massive interactive exhibit for Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium’s 2012 opening.

Artistic producers Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon are already hard at work on the inaugural exhibit for Montreal’s new Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium when it opens its doors in 2012, reports Journalmetro.

Their company, Lemieux Pilon 4D Art, has proposed a $904,000 design, which will include two separate planetarium shows and an interactive exhibit that resembles Stonehenge.

The first show will be an awe-inspiring  20-minute display of the cosmos set entirely to music. For the performance, visitors sit in bean-bag chairs on the highly-polished floor, which will reflect the nightime sky like the still surface of a lake.

"We see this part like we are bringing people to a lakeside in the Laurentians, with the sounds of frogs and toads and the sight above of the starry sky," Pilon told the Montreal Gazette.

The second show will be a traditional, narrated planetarium experience, created by astronomers. Guests will enjoy plush seats while they look up at the simulated sky during this 40-minute lecture.

Between the two shows, visitors will have time to explore the interactive exhibit. Vertical panels will be placed around an open room, arranged to resemble the standing stones of Stonehenge.
