John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics auctioned for $200K

Sheet of original lyrics for Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds sold for $237,132.

John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for the classic Beatles song Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds sold for $237,132 at a Hollywood auction this weekend, reports Spinner.

The lyrics sheet also contained the opening lines from another Beatles tune, She’s Leaving Home. Both tracks appeared on the band’s 1967 album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The number of edits on the handwritten composition suggests that the song was written over several hours in the studio, with help from bandmate Paul McCartney – who also composed She’s Leaving Home.

Although fans have often theorized that the title Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is a hidden reference to the drug LSD, the band has always denied this. According to Lennon, he was inspired by a drawing his son had done of a classmate named Lucy.

The auction was held at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, and organized by the auction house Profiles in History.

Other notable items up for bidding included the crystal ball used by the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz, the tricycle ridden by Damien in The Omen, and a letter from Walt Disney to animator (and Mickey Mouse creator) Ub Iwerks, forming what would become Disney Studios.
