Pirates star Johnny Depp and director Rob Marshall (Nine, Chicago) enjoyed working with each other so much on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, they decided to do it again for the remake of The Thin Man, reports Deadline.
In 1934, Dashiell Hammett’s detective novel became the basis of a successful six-part film series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. A television series followed from 1957 to 1959.
Set in Prohibition-era New York City, it tells the story of a former private detective, Nick, who has given up his career since marrying a wealthy socialite, Nora, and spends most of his time getting drunk. In the process of being drawn into a murder investigation, the couple shares a great deal of witty banter.
The big question is who will be cast opposite Depp to play Nora Charles. Since last October, Depp has been attached to star in a remake of The Thin Man, and recruited writer Jerry Stahl (Twin Peaks) to give the 1934 film a contemporary attitude, but retain the period setting, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be released in theaters on May 20. Depp is currently working with another director he likes very much, Tim Burton, on Dark Shadows, based on a television series and due out next year.
