U.S. onion museum now open in Georgia

Vidalia home to its own onion museum.

An unusual museum is now open in the American state of Georgia – the Vidalia Onion Museum, located in the city of Vidalia, explores the history of the famous vegetable.

In a region that is home to world-famous sweet onions, visitors can learn about the onion’s history and its economic, cultural and culinary significance through interactive, educational exhibits. They can also learn about farming and pick up some new recipes.

"We have worked for five years to unearth each unique layer of the Vidalia onion story and then portray those layers creatively for visitors," explains Wendy Brannen, executive director and museum chairperson.

"When we first hired a museum consultant, they asked, ‘Really, an onion museum?’ But they quickly realized we’re not just any onion, and this isn’t just any story!"

"Vidalia onions aren’t just the most famous onions in the world; I think they may be the only famous onions in the world," notes chef Bobby Flay in a statement on the museum’s website.

The museum is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
