Medicinal herbs: which are best?

Study finds that mothers give infants a wide variety of herbal supplements.

A nationwide study, recently published in the Journal of Pediatrics, found that nine percent of mothers gave herbal supplements and teas to infants under one year old, reports Medical News Today.

About 3,000 new moms, or one in every ten mothers, used natural remedies to medicate their babies. Those who used herbal remedies themselves were four times more likely to give them to their babies.

The study lists some of the most popular remedies for children. Echinacea is known to boost the immune system and help ward off colds and flus.

Chamomile is considered one of the best supplements as it contains anti-inflammatory essential oils that helps soothe the nervous system, in addition to relieving colic. A few drops before feeding helps the child’s digestion.

Valerian (or catnip) and fennel also have beneficial effects. The first helps relax babies to get them to sleep, and the second, to reduce gas, and both aid digestion.

Since herbal supplements aren’t as strictly regulated as other drugs, it’s recommended that parents consult their family physician before administering them to their child.
