William and Kate are married

Royal couple officially pronounced husband and wife – and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

With the whole world watching, Prince William and Catherine Middleton officially became husband and wife this morning (April 29) at Westminster Abbey in London – and the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, reports People.

Described as the biggest event since Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s royal wedding in 1981, it was a fairy-tale ending to a love story that captured the public’s imagination since the couple announced their engagement last November.

During the hour-long ceremony, William and Kate exchanged traditional vows of commitment, promising to cherish each other “for better or worse.”

The bride wore an ivory and white satin gown with a lace bodice designed by Sarah Burton at British fashion house Alexander McQueen. Kate Middleton, 29, worked closely with the designer in creating the design of her dress. The ivory silk tulle veil with hand-embroidered floral trim was held in place by a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara lent by the Queen.

Prince William, 28, looked dashing in the scarlet uniform of the Colonel of the Irish Guards, as did his brother, best man Prince Harry, in the uniform of Captain of the Household Cavalry.

The prince slipped a traditional Welsh gold wedding band on his bride’s finger, saying, “With this ring, I thee wed.”

The couple also wrote their own prayer for the special occasion:  for the ceremony: "God our Father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share and for the joy of our marriage," they said. "In the busyness of each day keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life and help us to be generous with our time and love and energy. Strengthened by our union help us to serve and comfort those who suffer."
