Natalie Portman joins The Avengers cast

Black Swan Oscar winner to reprise role for director Joss Whedon.

After starring alongside Chris Hemsworth in Thor, Black Swan Oscar-winner Natalie Portman will be reprising her role as Jane Foster in The Avengers, a supergroup of superheroes, reports Movie Web.

The upcoming American superhero film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, and crosses over several superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans star, with Joss Whedon directing from a script written by Zak Penn and Whedon himself. The Avengers is scheduled for 3-D release May 4, 2012.

Hemsworth confirmed Portman’s role during an interview to promote Thor. The 29-year-old actress is due to give birth to her first child this summer. Portman is currently starring in Your Highness, and Thor is due for release on May 6.
