Old Stones make new music on Boogie 4 Stu tribute album

20 years later, former and current Rolling Stones members honor Ian Stewart

Legends Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, and ex-bassist Bill Wyman have re-recorded Bob Dylan’s “Watchin’ The River Flow” on a new tribute album, Boogie 4 Stu, honoring the storied “6th Rolling Stone,” Ian Stewart.

Stewart was the first eager applicant to respond to Jones’ ad soliciting musicians for the now iconic Rolling Stones. As the band grew in popularity and began to cultivate their image, Stewart was ousted. His look was believed to be unmarketable to teenage girls.

The 11-track album, curated by Ben Waters and produced by Glynn Johns will be released April 19. Richards, Watts, and Woods also play on versions of Amos Milburn’s “Rooming House Boogie” and Big Maceo’s Worried Life Blues, Other contributors are Jools Holland and PJ Harvey, who covers Ray Charles’ 1956 hit, “Lonely Avenue”.

Stewart, originally from Scotland, passed away in December 1985 as a result of a heart attack.
