Beady Eye retro charity single

Proceeds from Across the Universe go towards Red Cross efforts in Japan.

U.K. alt rock band Beady Eye took part in a Beatles-themed benefit concert last weekend and have since released a charity single, a cover of Across the Universe, with proceeds going towards disaster relief efforts in Japan, reports Clash Music.

The band performed the Beatles tune for the sold-out crowd at London’s Brixton Academy on Sunday (April 3), joining  other headliners such as Graham Coxon, Primal Scream, The Coral, Richard Ashcroft and Paul Weller. In all, the benefit concert raised over $230,000 for Japan.

On the Saturday before the concert, Beady Eye spent eight hours in the studio recording the single, which is now available for sale through the band’s official website. Of the $1.59 it costs to download, a little over a dollar will go to the Red Cross.

Written by the late John Lennon during a stay in India, Across the Universe was originally released by the Beatles as part of a 1969 charity album, No One’s Gonna Change Our World, helping to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund.
