Holograms guide travellers through airport security

Travellers at Manchester Airport reminded of security policies by life-size holograms.

Travellers passing through Manchester Airport will be reminded of security policies by life-size holograms, in a new awareness campaign that starts Monday (January 31).

In an effort to speed up lines at security, it is the newest in a series of attempts to raise awareness of airport rules before travellers reach the checkpoint.

The holograms, which are modelled after two actual customer service employees of the airport, will greet customers as they enter the search area, reminding them of the restrictions on liquids in carry-on luggage.

"We don’t want anyone to have to throw their drink or make-up away so we’ve tried lots of different ways to reinforce the liquid rules, from posters to people dressed up as giant deodorant cans," explained airport employee Julie Caper, the basis of one of the holograms.

John Walsh, model for the second hologram, explained that the liquid restrictions "remain an area of confusion and it’s something we still have to spend a lot of time reminding our passengers … [They] can slow the process down for everyone and that’s something we want to find a solution to," he said in an interview with the BBC.
