Sex: good for your health

Immune system, heart and brain all improved by an active sex life.

An active sex life could be good for your health, making you look and feel younger, while also boosting your immune system, brain function, and cardiovascular health, says a new book published by anti-aging specialist, Dr Eric Braverman.

In his book, Younger (Sexier) You: Look And Feel 15 Years Younger By Having The Best Sex Of Your Life, Braverman explains the health benefits of sex, including stronger muscles and bones, an increase in vitamin D levels, and more oxytocin flowing to the brain – the "love hormone" that plays a role in reproductive health.

A study out of Queen’s University in Belfast found that having sex at least three times a week can help to halve the risk of heart attack or stroke in men.

Orgasms, meanwhile, are thought to boost the immune system, causing the body to produce 20 percent more infection-fighting cells than it would normally. Another study suggests that having sex regularly could even help fight off the flu.

For those who aren’t so naturally inclined, Braverman says that certain foods can help to increase the levels of dopamine, the hormone largely responsible for our sex drives. Protein is central in the production of dopamine, while coffee and tea can also help to give it a boost.
